Not it!
Apparently fearful that children might come in contact with each other and potentially get owies on their self-esteem, some schools are banning tag at recess.
What the fuck is wrong with people?
I'm not aware of any verified accounts of children growing up to be viscious psychopaths or US Congressmen because they "weren't feeling good" about playing tag. The last time I checked, tag was responsible for the following:
- a simple, open-ended, highly-inclusive game in which any kid can play
- developing interpersonal skills and problem-solving
- providing physical exercise, even to porkos
- fun for kids (gasp!)
Seriously, kids can get hurt walking out their front door...are you going to ban that, too? What about baseball...those kids have bats! When is this ridiculous trend of over-coddling children going to end? Are we consciously trying to raise a nation of pussies? Can't we let kids enjoy the thrill of the chase or that rush you get when you tag the most elusive kid in school?
If you expend all your parental energy creating a risk-free environment during the one stage in their life where a little pushing and yelling is both developmental and easily shaken-off then they may never learn to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and kick-ass next time.
