Unemployment is an excellent promoter of financial ingenuity. I'm one week in, and I've already sought a roommate, taken a part-time job, and farmed out my organs for medical experiments. That's about enough to cover my COBRA payments, but it ain't putting food in my baby's mouth.
So this weekend we hosted a contemporary art show featuring the early works of an up-and-coming local artist.
Working at a short table under a kitchen counter, the artist transformed birds, rainbows, and "a cow" into iridescent subjects, remarkable in color, light, and vision. Compelling metaphors for a range of sensations, these paintings convey a disquieting effect, merging the innocence of youth with the occasional violence of partially developed motor skills. Each piece offers a poignant reflection of our own perceptions of life, smeared onto white paper.
The artist herself personally invited her grandparents, scions of local society, and offered them exclusive access to the pieces prior to their auction at Sotheby's. Although prices are kept strictly confidential, observers overheard negotiations ranging from "one thousand dollars" to "five-dy dollars."
By all measures the show was a smashing success, with several quarters and dimes added to the piggy-bank. At its conclusion, the artist thanked her special guests, and celebrated by blowing bubbles inside the house.
