The Skulduggery Pleasant Series and You, the Winner
If I were to tell you about the Skulduggery Pleasant books you might ask, who is SkuIduggery Plesant? And then I would quote the website because they provide a very quotable answer:
Skulduggery Pleasant? He's a wise-cracking detective, powerful magician, master of dirty tricks and burglary (in the name of the greater good, of course). As well as ally, protector, and mentor of Stephanie Edgley, a very unusual and darkly talented twelve-year old. And, oh yeah - he's dead.
What?
You heard read me. D-E-A-D. Kids love that stuff. And so does my wife. Hence my being on the first book and her being done with all three. In my defense, she reads really fast.
The Skulduggery Pleasant series is fantastic teen literature. By fantastic I mean that is intended for teens but strong enough for a woman. Or any adult, really. Think Eragon, Harry Potter and Bartimaeus. Also, anything by John Grisham.
My wife claimed that she was surprised, pleasantly, to find intensity and darkness in the series. Me? I expected it. And it delivered.
The story starts with then 12-year-old Stephanie Edgley dealing with her uncle Gordon's death (don't worry, not the Gordon from Sesame Street). Then the story pretty much gets going and, like a west coast party, it doesn't stop. Stephanie learns about the whole world of magic that exists around her and she does everything she can to become a part of it. She's got spirit.
Well, more of a skeleton really. She teams up with Skullduggery Pleasant and hilarity ensues.
There are three books in the series, Scepter of the Ancients, Playing with Fire and The Faceless Ones. All three books can be read as an individual story, meaning there is an ending to each adventure, but that would be doing yourself a disservice. You gotta come strong or not at all, gentle reader. Do the series.
And by "do" I mean "win" as in this is your chance to win all three books. Here's how: live in the USA or Canada and know how to read. Just leave your name in the comments below and on October 7th I'll pick an entry at random, and by random I mean whoever sends the biggest bribe. Please note, if you don't claim your prize in one week I'll draw someone else. That's not a threat, that's a promise.
Good luck!
