The Hot Topic: Health Insurance Reform!

Gonna make this quick, as I have to get the house ready for CBS News' Ben Tracy and his camera crew. They'll be talking to Beth and I today about how we'd be affected by the proposed health care reform legislation; specifically, we'll be talking about our nightmarish experiences trying to get health insurance for Lucas (you can read more about that here).

I'm thrilled to be able to tell our story. As I've said, we're not looking for handouts, or government-run hospitals; as self-employed folk (you know, the small business owners/entrepreneurs that the GOP professes to side with) we pay for our own coverage, and while it's expensive, we can afford it. What we can't afford: the crippling medical bills that we'd be facing should anything remotely serious happen to Lucas. There are millions like us, people who can afford coverage and are willing to pay for it, but are kept from doing so by the insurance industry and their ridiculous "pre-existing conditions". (Lucas has been denied coverage because he was being treated for an infected spider bite.)

I want to hear from anyone who's dealing with similar issues. I don't care to hear opposing views about whether or not we need health insurance reform; frankly, I've heard enough fearmongering and blame-casting from people who've been lucky to not have to deal with this, and I'm quite sure that those who have health insurance would be whistling a much different tune if they were in our shoes. So if you've been screwed by Big Insurance, tell us your tale in the comments below.
